The Herb & Nada Mahler Family Aviary at the Milwaukee County Zoo is now closed for the foreseeable future due to a confirmed case of HPAI, commonly known as avian influenza, in the Zoo parking lot. A wild Canada goose was found deceased early this week and tested for avian influenza, which has been standard protocol for the Zoo. Upon confirmation of the positive test, and out of an abundance of caution meant to protect our avian population, the Aviary will close. Currently, no animal in the Zoo’s care has been affected by avian influenza.
With avian influenza becoming endemic, the Zoo has continued strong cautionary protocols for its Aviary since last year, which has included closing the building early for cleaning and maintaining biosecurity efforts for staff behind the scenes. These efforts will strengthen with additional safety measures. In addition, the Zoo has been testing any deceased birds that have been found on Zoo grounds as a precautionary measure.
The majority of the Zoo’s birds with outdoor access have been inside due to the recent cold weather and have had minimal exposure. The Penguins of the Pacific habitat does not see wildlife presence, and our Humboldt penguins will remain out on their habitat to not cause them distress as breeding season approaches.
The whooping cranes will also remain out on their habitat, which has a standard protective netting over them.
The Zoo will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
