No shadow! The goats’ prediction is an early spring! Watch the recap on Facebook here.
The Milwaukee County Zoo’s Nigerian dwarf goats will have the honor of handling the duties for the 2025 annual Groundhog Day weather prediction on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 9 a.m. The ceremony, for media only, will be hosted by Zoo Executive Director Amos Morris and will take place at the Northwestern Mutual Family Farm Goat Yard, prior to the Zoo’s public opening.
The goats will run out into their yard to make their winter, or early spring, prediction. Following the ceremony, the Zoo will announce the prediction to the public via its social media platforms and here on our website.
In 2024, the Zoo’s Humboldt penguins were in the spotlight, but the Zoo is excited to now highlight the goats, another favorite of Zoo guests. The penguins are currently nesting and still getting acclimated to their recently renovated Penguins of the Pacific Habitat, which opened in December 2024.
According to (new) tradition, if the goats see their shadows, Milwaukee can expect six more weeks of winter. If the goats don’t see their shadow, we can look forward to an early spring!
Nigerian dwarf goats are native to West Africa and are known for their small stature. They can be seen up close and personal at the Zoo from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
