The Milwaukee County Zoo welcomes a Grant’s zebra foal, Mistari (pronounced mee-STAH-ree), a 73-pound female born April 22 to mom, Thelma. Thelma arrived at MCZ in April 2025 from Como Park Zoo & Conservatory in St. Paul, Minnesota — and zookeepers received the happy surprise that she was pregnant. The foal is the first to be born at MCZ since Kelly, the Zoo’s other resident zebra, was born in June 2006.

Mistari is doing well and has already joined Thelma and Kelly in the recently renovated outdoor yard at the Ladish Co. Rhino Care Center. She can be seen running around the yard and staying close to mom. Mistari is of Swahili origin and means “striped.”

The three zebras can be viewed outside daily, weather permitting.
