Wild for Rhinos

Eastern black rhino Kianga in the indoor habitat

Date

May 2

Time

9:30 a.m.
- 3:00 p.m.

We’re going “Wild for Rhinos” and celebrating the opening of the outdoor habitats of the new Ladish Co. Foundation Rhino Care Center!

With warmer temperatures, Eastern black rhinos Kianga and Zuri will now have access to the recently-renovated outdoor yards. The yards provide over 36,000 square feet including individual spaces for rhinos, zebras, and red river hogs — and use 100% of the previous animal viewing space.

To commemorate the occasion, join us from 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. for a day full of themed activities.

The festivities include:

  • Complimentary Water Bottle for First 500 Guests: Reducing our use of disposable plastic bottles is a great way to help the environment.
  • Sticker Bar: Decorate your new reusable bottle with zoo-mazing stickers at our sticker bar. Bring your own bottle from home if you weren’t lucky enough to snag one of ours.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Tours: See behind the scenes in the new Rhino Care Center and Robert Dohmen Hippo Indoor Haven. Donations received during tours will go to the International Rhino Foundation (IRF). Tour locations subject to change based on availability.
  • Zookeeper Q&A: Now’s your chance to ask our animal care team everything you’ve ever wanted to know about our rhinos, hippo, and the other residents of Adventure Africa.
    • Rhinos: 11 a.m. & 2 p.m.
    • Hippo: 1 p.m.
  • Animal Enrichment: Watch as the rhinos and hippo receive a special springtime snack — watermelon.
    • Rhinos: 12:30 p.m.
    • Hippo: 2:15 p.m.
  • Rhino Romp Scavenger Hunt: Get to know our residents and learn all about their new home through the Rhino Romp Scavenger Hunt. Throughout the day, we’ll have prizes for those who complete the scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt will also run through International Rhino Day (September 22), with prizes awarded monthly.
  • Design a Rhino Horn Headband: You’ll be (almost) as majestic as Zuri and Kianga when you design your own rhino horn headband.
  • Photo Station: Pose with your new headband.
  • Animal Biofacts: Examine animal biofacts from African wildlife.
  • Mural: Watch as artists transform the walls of the Conservation Outpost with a mural commemorating the completion of Adventure Africa!
  • Roaming Rhino Safari: Spend a day in the life of a rhino. Roam the savanna and learn about how rhinos live in the wild.
  • Sponsor an Animal: Show your love for animals at the Milwaukee County Zoo by sponsoring an animal! These sponsorships help conserve wildlife and endangered species, educate about the importance of wildlife and the environment, and support the Zoo.
