At the 2025 Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Annual Conference, the Milwaukee County Zoo earned Top Honors for the Angela Peterson Excellence in Diversity Award, which recognizes institutions that demonstrate transformational leadership in diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion. MCZ was honored for its partnership with Project SEARCH, a nine-month vocational training program for young adults with disabilities.
Interns work in a variety of departments at the Zoo, Zoological Society of Milwaukee, and SSA Group to gain skills in food service, retail, education, grounds, rides, and behind-the-scenes animal areas, which helps them with career exploration, along with key job skills. 2025 marked the 10th year for MCZ hosting Project SEARCH interns.
“What an honor it was to receive the Angela Peterson Excellence in Diversity Award at the AZA Conference this year,” MCZ Executive Director Amos Morris said. “I am very proud of the Zoo’s partnership with Project SEARCH. It is wonderful to see the growth of these young adults, from shyness at their start at the Zoo to leaving empowered with a sense of purpose at graduation.”
