Reticulated giraffe Asante has transferred safely to his new home at another AZA-accredited zoo. Asante was born Aug. 4, 2022, to parents Ziggy and Bahatika. Asante’s transfer is due to a breeding recommendation — when he’s old enough — from the Species Survival Plan® (SSP) through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). In their natural range of sub-Saharan Africa, and at almost 2 years old, a male reticulated giraffe of this age would likely be joining up with other herds or groups of young males.
The animal care team at MCZ worked with him in preparation for the move using positive reinforcement training, and they note, “Asante is a very smart and curious animal who picks up on learning new things quickly.”
The current giraffe herd at MCZ includes:
Other giraffes have departed from MCZ in the past, and the remaining herd mates do notice the change. They may look for Asante for a day or two but will likely adjust quickly alongside their companion giraffes.
His animal care team shares, “We’re very fond of Asante. He engaged with us regularly for training, snacks — and simply attention! We know Asante will be a favorite of zookeepers and guests alike in his new home, and we wish him all the best.”
