No shadow! The penguin prediction is an early spring! Watch the recap below.
On Friday, Feb. 2, 2024, the Zoo’s Humboldt penguins will be taking over the duties for the annual weather prediction on Groundhog Day.
Check out our feathered friends’ forecast!
The Zoo’s most recent groundhog, Gordy, passed away in 2023; the Zoo’s animal care staff is in the process of acquiring another groundhog to add to the population.
The prediction will take place at 9 a.m. (before the Zoo opens to the public) at the Taylor Family Humboldt Penguin habitat. The Zoo’s Humboldt penguins waddle into the spotlight this year to make the winter (or spring!) weather prediction. Afterward, the Zoo will announce the weather prediction for the public on its social media platforms and here on the website.
According to the (new) tradition, if the penguin sees its shadow, 6 more weeks of winter are to be expected. If the penguin does not see its shadow, we can look forward to an early spring.
