The Zoo shares the very difficult news that on Wednesday, May 24, between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., one of its zebras passed away in the Impala Plains habitat.
The male zebra, Stuart, was beginning his time in the habitat for the day. He had been in the habitat several times this year, as has been the case for the previous 4 summer seasons. During the winter, Impala Plains’ animals roam the outdoor habitat when the temperature is above 50 degrees. During the colder winter temperatures, these animals reside in the indoor, heated Hoof Stock barn. The Impala Plains habitat also includes impala and ostriches.
As he was exploring, running and chasing the impalas in the yard, Stuart inadvertently hit a wire containment fence pole. The wire fencing surrounds the habitat. Despite the immediate response from the veterinary team, Stuart did not survive his injuries.
This tragic accident is a heartbreaking loss for the animal care team, and for everyone who cares about the Zoo’s animals. The focus now is on the wellbeing of the impalas and the ostriches who share the habitat.
The impalas were brought inside for the remainder of the day, and the ostriches returned to the yard.
Stuart was born in 2018 at the Hemker Park & Zoo in Minnesota and arrived at MCZ in 2019.
