Animal Health Center
In 2003, the Zoo completed construction of the Animal Health Center. This facility meets the high standards set forth by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Features include:
· Dedicated clinical facilities, including surgery, treatment and radiology rooms that can accommodate animals weighing as much as 2,000 pounds
· A clinical laboratory accommodating diagnostic testing for hundreds of animal species
· Specialized animal quarantine wards that meet Centers for Disease Control requirements for primates
· Facilities that meet current and future needs of our veterinary department staff and our teaching-hospital programs, including veterinary preceptorships, veterinary technician internships, clinical veterinarian residencies and pathology veterinarian residencies
· A records system area that allows for storage and retrieval of our extensive veterinary records – more records than almost any other zoo in the world
The unique feature of a public viewing area serves to encourage visitors to learn about veterinary medicine, Zoo research projects and diagnostic procedures. Guests also have an elevated view of the surgery and treatment rooms. Open daily; procedures (if scheduled) change daily.
