Former animal trainer, Henry M. Kennon, became Zoo Director until 1946.  He was credited with replacing the drab, gray paint, inside many of the animal enclosures, with a pastel green that gave the public a better view of the animals.  Kennon dreamt of a children’s petting area within the Zoo.  He envisioned small fences youngsters could look over and see familiar animals such as turtles and rabbits.
